Manipur tops in MSME registration among NE states

Imphal, Oct. 11 (EMN): Manipur has secured the top spot for having the largest number of registered Micro, Small and Medium businesses in the Northeast region of the country.

According to the Ministry of MSME, Government of India report,  from 2015 to 2019, a total of 68.25 lakh business registrations were done in the Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) for the country.

Out of the said total number, in Northeast region, Manipur had around 12,438 business registrations, Tripura had 2317, Assam had 2000, Mizoram had 1003, Meghalaya had 795, Nagaland had 292 and Sikkim had 288 business registrations.

Manipur also ranked  in the top position in women ownership of MSME businesses in the country.

India’s 20 percent MSME businesses are owned by women while in Manipur businesses women ownership is 60%.

It may be mentioned that the largest all women run market in Asia is located in the heart of Imphal town.

Congratulating the people for the achievement, Chief Minister N Biren Singh said that the reason behind the achievement is because of the public support, less number of bandh and blockade and improvement of the law and order situation in the state.

Briefing the media persons at the Secretariat Hall on Friday, Singh said Manipur’s share in national population is 0.2%  while its share in MSME businesses is 0.3%  which is higher than the state’s share in national population.

Manipur also has one of the highest numbers of MSME businesses per lakh population. I t is more than national’s average.

In India for every one lakh population there are 4770 MSME businesses while in Manipur it is 6500 MSME businesses per lakh population.

Supporting Chief Minister’s statement and sharing a similar sentiment by giving official datas, officer on special duty Sumant Singh at the chief minister’s secretariat said that during 2005 to 2019 as many as 16,381 new businesses filed tax return. The number of business during this period rose from 653 to 16,381 which shows annual compounded annual growth rate of above 25 percent. Out of 16,381 businesses, 10,352 businesses (63 percent) were registered during the last two and half years alone, he added.

The state government has given an “aggressive” push to women entrepreneurship by Manipur Start-up program and women focused business infrastructure leading to sharp growth in women owned business, said the officer.
