Wokha, Feb. 11 (EMN): The 5th lt. Emi Merry (IAS) memorial women football and volleyball championship organised by the Wokha District Women Sports Association (WDWSA) got underway at Wokha local football ground with Vilone Sakhrie as the special guest on Tuesday, February 11.

Speaking at the opening programme, Sakhrie said that organising a women tournament is his long dream for promoting women in the field of sports, where his dream has been initiated by the WDWSA, he added. He also encouraged all to make a state-wide women tournament which will accommodate all women of the districts in the state. He said, in early days women were not allowed to play because all games were dominated by male but now, time has changed and make all women to participate in every field. While encouraging the organisers, he assured to help the association even in the days to come.

Altogether 22 teams consisting of eight football and 14 volleyball teams including a team from Tuensang district are vying for the championship.

In the first match, the match between defending champions Suren Women SC and Chumpo Women SC Koio ended in a tie.

In volleyball, Tsumang and Rising Star Forest Colony registered win against Yanthamo Eloe Ekhung and Midland Eloe Ekhung.
