Kohima, April 9 (EMN):
Nationwide lockdown in the wake of novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic appears to have taken a toll on the state government’s machineries with its resources gradually petering out. There is apprehension that prolonged lockdown could virtually affect the whole exercise of relief work.
This concern was shared by the administrator of Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) Kovi Meyase who said that Covid-19 has caught the state machinery unawares “because we were the least prepared.”

He has highlighted on the initiatives undertaken by KMC in the form of Information Education and Communication (IEC) activities, sanitisation of the streets, free water distribution to colony, pork meat delivery to colony, leasing online-home delivery shopping services. The administrator asserted that the government is trying its best to ensure that essential commodities reach its denizens.

On the challenges, Meyase said, “Ours is a municipality which does not have much revenue and about 65 per cent of the revenue comes from trade license and toll gate now.” He added that limited resources is one of the biggest hurdles they are facing. He also informed that KMC has procured personal protective equipment and other medical equipment for its workers.

He however stated that they are not prepared if the lockdown prolonged. He stated that KMC would not be able to feed its staff and workers if the lockdown continues for a couple of weeks or fortnight.

Meyase revealed that only INR 2 lakh was sanctioned by the Municipal Affairs while the remaining expenditures are borne by KMC alone. Under the prevailing circumstances, Meyase stated that it is imperative for the government department to come to their rescue.

Free Water distribution
Meyase said KMC has started free water distribution to colony and ward as the government water supply would cover only 10 percent of the households. He stated that 2000 litre of water is distributed in all the 52 recognised colonies with the support of some line departments and individuals.

He has particularly mentioned individuals namely Vilelie Khamo, KC Angami and Pele Khezhie who have contributed trucks and tankers for delivery of water. Meyase added that some colonies have also voluntarily come out on their own to distribute water to its residents.

Shortage of Pork meat
The nationwide lockdown has affected the import of meat. “There is a report that there is no more pig supply coming into the state. The stock for Kohima perhaps at best may last till tomorrow only,” Meyase said.

He added that the authority is planning an alternative arrangements of bringing local pork from villages through the colony delivery system.
