Legislator urges farmers to enhance productivity

Dimapur, Dec. 18 (EMN): The advisor for Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, and Women Resources Development, R Khing has insisted application of modern technology in agriculture to double the productivity of farmers and reduce import of food grains from other states.

Khing stated this in his speech at the state-level Kisan Mela-farmers-scientist programme that was conducted at Tseminyu town hall on December 17 on the theme “Technology intervention for doubling farmers income.”

The programme was organised by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Kohima, an update from the KVK of Kohima stated on Wednesday.

Khing was of the opinion that farmers’ products are organic since ages as they have been cultivating for self-sustenance. He, however, advocated the application of modern technology in agriculture for doubling the income of individual farmers, which in turn could indirectly reduce the import of food grains from other states.

He also released two publications on ‘Inventory of technologies in agriculture for Kohima district – Technical bulletin No-I, and an annual newsletter Vol-II, No-I of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kohima. The special guest also inaugurated the exhibition.

KVKs from Wokha, Dimapur, Peren, Kohima, Phek, Mon, Tuensang, Longleng, Mon, Mokokchung, department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, ATMA Kohima, Henbenji farmers club, SHGs under Tseminyu sub-division are participating in the exhibition.

Dr. Hanna Krujia from KVK Phek, Dr. BL Mhalo Tungoe from KVK Wokha, Dr. Ebibeni Ngulie and Dr. V Kenny Rhetsu from KVK Dimapur, James Kikon from KVK Peren, and Dr. Ruopfuselhou Kehie from KVK Mokokchung were the panellists during the farmers-scientist interaction.

A PowerPoint presentation on “Progress on doubling of farmers income at Wokha district,” “Improved agriculture practices for livelihood improvement,” and “Promotion of potato seed village at Tuensang district” were presented by Dr. BL Mhalo Tungoe, Dr. Khumdamo Ezung and Seveto Nyekha respectively.

The programme was organised by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kohima, in association with the Agriculture Technology Application Research Institute Zone-VII, Umian, Meghalaya, under the sponsorship of ICAR-Vivekananda Parvatiya Krishi Anusandhan Sansdhan, Almora, Uttarakhand.
