
DIMAPUR — Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Zunheboto, Nagaland University (NU), celebrated the International Year of Millet by conducting 3rd millet recipe contest at Lumami village on September 20.
Dr. Rakesh Kumar Chaurasia, principal scientist and head, KVK NU, was the chief host for the event.
According to a press release, participants from nine Lumami village SHGs competed in the contest, which was presided over by Narola Anichari, technical officer (Home Science) at KVK NU.
Chaurasia encouraged the gathering on the occasion to reintroduce millet into their daily diets, claiming that it has numerous advantages over other crops.
[bsa_pro_ad_space id=1]He illustrated a number of health issues that can be managed by including millets in their daily diets, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, celiac disease, osteoporosis, and so on.
He asked the farmers to begin cultivating millet, which, he said, can fetch a premium price in the market, and SHGs to pursue millet value addition, which would help them earn more.
During the millet recipe contest, contestants prepared a variety of items such as millet pancakes, millet cupcakes, millet biscuits, millet pakora, steamed millet, millet laddu, etc., and cash awards and certificates were given to the top five SHGs.
