KOHIMA — After a recent viral video on social media showing waste littered across the gallery of IG Stadium during the ongoing Dr. T Ao Trophy, the Konyak Students’ Union Kohima (KSUK) on Monday took the initiative to clean the gallery following the match between Mon and Dimapur districts.
KSUK leaders told Eastern Mirror that the cleanliness drive was conducted after the first quarter-final match between Mon and Dimapur.
‘Since there was a huge crowd, we tried to clean up as much as possible,’ they said.
The initiative, they explained, was prompted by the repeated sight of large crowds leaving behind trash, and the video shared by the organisers.
‘In a civilised society, no one likes to be in a dirty place. So, with the help of Kohima Konyak Church Youth and KSUK, we decided to take this step,’ they added.

As supporters of the team from Mon, they also assured that the cleanliness drive would continue during the district’s upcoming matches.

They urged spectators to take responsibility for their waste, reminding them that “the stadium is for everyone, and it will be best if each person cleans up their own trash instead of throwing it around.”
Kohima Deputy Commissioner Henok Buchem, who is also member secretary of the organising committee for the 24th Dr. T Ao Inter-District Football Tournament, said that they have a ground management committee that is responsible for cleanliness, maintenance, and sanitation of the stadium.
While appreciating the KSUK’s efforts, Buchem appealed to the fans to “enjoy the match while keeping the surroundings and galleries clean.”
