Dimapur, Dec. 20 (EMN): Personnel of the Kohima district task force for total ban of single-use plastic conducted on December 19 its third checking and “confiscation exercise” covering Kohima town.

The task force comprises members from the district administration, various other departments, and public organisations.

The government publicity agency the department of Information and Public Relations (IPR) gave updates to the media on Thursday informing about the enforcement activity.

According to the IPR, they conducted the “checking exercise” with the objective to enforce the total ban that has been imposed on all single-use plastic products.

Besides, the task force iterated through its activity the restriction that has been imposed on shops in the Kohima jurisdiction from selling or using certain products. These include plastic bags, polypropylene bags, mineral water bottles below one litre, and Styrofoam cups and plates, plastic cups, forks and spoons and a number of other single-use non-biodegradable plastic products.

The Kohima district task force conducted the checking ‘exercise’ in five different teams, each covering different areas, the IPR stated.

‘A large number of shops were caught still selling the banned single-use plastic products. The erring shopkeepers were fined and let off with a warning. The banned products were all confiscated by the teams for disposal,’ the updates stated.

The IPR reports that the government of Nagaland is working to make Nagaland a plastic-free state. The efforts of the Kohima district task force are “indeed making a difference with a huge decrease in the output of non-biodegradable plastic waste,” the IPR claimed.

Although there is still a need for improvement on the level of awareness and participation among the public in general, the efforts of the Kohima district task force contributes to Kohima’s move toward being a plastic-free town, the IPR stated.
