Dimapur, Feb. 12 (EMN):  The district administration of Kohima has directed enforcement authorities to monitor certain areas that are observed to have ‘high increase of smoking rate.’

The district’s deputy commissioner, Gregory Thejawelie, has directed anti-tobacco officials to carry out a ‘drive’ in all the ‘notified public places,’ updates stated.

They are directed to monitor “by exercising the power conferred by section 21, 24 and 25 of the cigarette and others Tobacco products (Prohibition of advertisement and regulation of the trade and commerce production, supply and distribution) Act 2003 and for effective implementation of Section 4 and 6 of COTPA 2003.”

The department of Information and Public Relations (IPR), the government’s publicity agency, gave updates to the media on Wednesday informing about the notice.

The clauses: Section 4 – Prohibition of smoking in public places; Section 6 – (a) Prohibition on sale of cigarette or other tobacco products to a person below the age of 18 years. (b) Prohibition on sale of tobacco products in an area within a radius of 100 yards of an educational institution.

The IPR stated that the administration issued the notice ‘observing the high increase of smoking rate in public places.’
