Vibrant, radiant with an ethnic touch are impressions of Jewelry designer Gugu Kuotsu’s pieces.
Having launched her collection under the name “Gutouch” earlier this year, this young girl from Kohima Village ventured into Jewelry designing without any formal education and made a name for herself. She is also into photography and interior designing when not working on her most treasured passion of Jewelry designing.
Sharing her favorite parable of talents in the Bible (Matt 25:14-28), Jewelry designer Gugu Kuotsu speaks about the inspiration for her accessories, and explains the importance of making use of her gift genuinely in-order to make a living, while not forgetting the almighty God for his grace upon her.

Eastern Mirror: What drew you to jewelry design and specifically wanting to start your own brand?
Gugu Kuotsu: Since my early years I’ve always been interested in designing and making accessories and gradually I realized that my passion was in jewelry designing. My friends supported and helped me sell them at colleges, school, at offices and shops. I also sell them in international, national trade fair, in and around India…… It was my friends who suggested that I should come up with my own brand name….. ….After a lot of thoughts I came up with the name ‘Gutouch’.

Eastern Mirror: Did you undertake formal training within the Industry, or did you find your way into designing independently?
Gugu Kuotsu: I did not pursue any sort of formal training for jewelry designing. For me, the interest to design and decorate things and the desire to experiment with new ideas kept me working on them. And I owe it all to the almighty God for bringing me this far.

Eastern Mirror: What are the latest jewelry trends of 2015?
Gugu Kuotsu: In order to be fashionable one need to be conscious of the latest trends in the world of jewelry which is always changing and does not stay the same without adding innovative designs and trends from time to time.
Jewelry pieces that are usually worn oversized hoops are also amongst the hottest trends; geometric designs come to dominate most of the jewelry designs make the jewelry pieces more fashionable. Even single statement earrings are also in latest trends that adorn just one ear and are large in their sizes.……The most common materials that are used for creating the jewelry pieces at present are gold, crystal, feather and leather, you can also find other materials such as wood, plastics, bamboo, metals etc.

Eastern Mirror: What type of material do you prefer to use?
Gugu Kuotsu: I work with all kinds of materials ranging from wood, bamboo, metals, feathers, beads, fabric, stones and anything that can bring out the best of what I intend to create.
Eastern Mirror: How long does the process take – from inspiration to designing the piece and producing it? As a designer, where do you draw your inspiration?
Gugu Kuotsu: It does not take long for me to start working on my jewelry and get them done, provided I have the right type of materials that I need to complete the design that I have in mind or I can spent days searching through all the shops in town looking for that right piece that will give the perfect touch to my humble designs.

Eastern Mirror: What would you most like to make that you haven’t so far?
Gugu Kuotsu: Well I would like to upgrade my jewelry designs using gold and silver and work with semi-precious stones.

Eastern Mirror: What would you describe as the most significant development in your work over the years?
Gugu Kuotsu: My work been appreciated and the encouragement that I get from my near n dear ones has really inspired me to work even harder and put my best into everything that I do..

Eastern Mirror: What is the scenario of Jewelry industry in Nagaland especially coming to designers?
Gugu Kuotsu: Nagaland seems to be at par with the fashion world as far as clothing is concern, when the fashion world started to grow many local artist with their traditionally inspired work became successful. However in my humble opinion when the clothing line started to expand it created a gap between clothing line and jewelry industries….. Jewelry has much scope in Nagaland and we the local artist meet to bridge the gap between the clothing world and jewelry industry which grow hand in hand in the fashion world.
