The maiden Havildar Mering Ao Shaurya Chakra (Retd) Open Badminton Tournament concludes in Mokokchung with the 105-year-old WWII veteran in attendance.

MOKOKCHUNG — More than 130 players participated in the maiden Havildar Mering Ao, Shaurya Chakra (Retd) Open Badminton Tournament, organised by the Assam Rifles Mokokchung Battalion under the aegis of Headquarters IGAR (North), which concluded at the Indoor Badminton Stadium in Mokokchung on Saturday.
The closing ceremony was attended by World War II veteran Havildar Mering Ao, Shaurya Chakra (retd), aged 105, from Sungratsu Village in Mokokchung district.
Brig. Rajeev Nayan Singh, Deputy Inspector General (DIG), 7 Sector Assam Rifles, attended the prize distribution ceremony as the chief guest.

Addressing the gathering, the DIG expressed satisfaction that the tournament had successfully achieved its primary objective: to inculcate and embody the spirit of sportsmanship among young athletes.
He said that the Ministry of Home Affairs had sponsored the event, underscoring its commitment to nurturing and developing talented sportspersons from India's eastern region. He expressed optimism that an increasing number of athletes from the area would emerge in the coming years to represent the nation at higher levels.

He further announced that the tournament would henceforth become an annual fixture on the sporting calendar, to be held every January.
The inaugural ceremony on January 28 was kicked off by Lt. Gen. Vikas Lakhera, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal, Director General of Assam Rifles.
In a detailed briefing, Maj. Pratik Singh highlighted the tournament's innovative features, including free registration and a cash incentive of INR 1,000 for the winner of every match. He elaborated that victors in any category would receive the designated prize money in addition to the per-victory cash rewards.
