Elephant death: Green activists serve ultimatum to Neepco

Dimapur, April 8: A conservation activist group called Green Succession of Nagaland state (Green-Sons) has served a 15-day ultimatum to the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (Neepco) at Doyang in Wokha district to ‘rectify anomalies’ with regard to an incident that reportedly occurred on April 6 evening during which two adult elephants were said to have been electrocuted, at Baghty in Wokha district.
Addressing a press conference in Dimapur on Mon. April 8, the Green-Sons’ chairman Jess Murry cautioned that if Neepco fails to do as demanded by the group, the company’s power grid line will be cut the action for which the nongovernmental organisation will be held not responsible.

“Electrocution of elephants is not a new incident and the transmission of electric current have caused danger not only to wild animals but to humans as well while environment has been disturbed by the transmission line that has been installed not in standard height,” Murry pointed out.

The main risk, he said, was a power grid line which has to be rectified by the Neepco.
The group’s vice chairman Z James Kikon said that the organisation was not blaming the govt. but the management as the case in question was not the first incident when elephants had been electrocuted, and in the same place.
Such negligence is endangering humans too, Kikon said.

It was reported that on April 7 an elephant calf had strayed into a locality in Sanis in Wokha district which was subsequently rescued by Green-Sons volunteers and local youths.
