Do’s and Don’ts for Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) / Japanese Encephalitis (JE)

Do’s
• Remove all sources of stagnant water.
• Fill up ditches, pot-holes and unwanted water collection with earth.
• Turn over buckets, utensils etc and discard unused tires to avoid water collection
• Keep water filled tanks and vessels tightly covered.
• Keep surroundings clean and dry.
• Sleeping under Long Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLIN)/mosquito nets daily
• Personal protection through use of mosquito repellents.
• Introduce larvivorous fishes in the paddy fields and other stagnant bodies to eat up the mosquito larva.
• Larvivorous fishes are available at Urban Malaria Scheme at Chief Medical Officer office, Dimapur.
• In case of any illness which resembles the symptoms of JE i.e. Headache, fever, disorientation, coma, tremors, paralysis and loss of coordination, visit your nearest health centre/district hospital for investigation and treatment of cases.

Don’ts
• It is discouraged to rear pigs near human dwellings as the virus gets multiplied in the pigs which can be transmitted to humans.
• Avoid sleeping near pigsties
• Go for self medication
