DMC inspects fish markets

Dimapur, June 25 (EMN): The Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) has inspected fish markets at Railway Bazaar and New Market in Dimapur on June 25. The inspection was carried out according to the directive issued by the Nagaland State Food Safety Commissioner.

In the wake of the news outbreak about formalin-laced fish making headlines in the country, the DMC on Monday evening took an initiative to inspect fish markets in the town. The council said that they would carry out another inspection on June 26 at Sematilla during fish auctioning.

So far, the DMC has collected six different types of fish— three each from New Market and Railway Bazaar. The DMC will send the collected fish to Kohima tomorrow for lab test.

During an interaction with the media at the DMC’s office, the administrator of DMC Moatemsu Sangtam said, the municipal will try to get the test done by tomorrow and according to the outcome of the test they will initiate actions.

He admitted that it was the first time that the DMC carrying out an inspection of such kind.
Recently, it has come to light that fish laced with formalin are on sale in different parts of the country. It was informed that several quantities of fish laced with formalin were seized in some parts of the country.

Medical experts said that formalin (formaldehyde) which is generally used to preserve deceased bodies can cause serious ailments like cancer. It is because formalin contains carcinogen, a substance capable of causing cancer in living tissue.
