Dimapur to have PwDs home by 2020

Mokokchung, Dec. 3 (EMN): The society director of Child Protection Service, Nagaland, Chubaienla Jamir informed that Dimapur will have a PwDs home by 2020.
There were no separate homes for PwDs or for that matter child in need of protection in the state but the Centre as accepted the proposal for a PwDs Home, Jamir said while addressing the International Day of Persons with Disabilities at Town Hall, Mokokchung as the special guest on Tuesday.

To achieve universal accessibility for PwDs, she said the department of Social Welfare (DSW) under the department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) has launched the Accessible India Campaign (Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan). She added that under the campaign, the DSW has initiated construction of ramps and toilets in most of the government offices, colleges and hospitals across Nagaland for easy accessibility for PwDs.

She said the programmes will further cover all the schools and private hospitals in the state. a unique ID for PwDs is being implemented in collaboration with the Medical department in view of creating a national database for them, she added.

Jamir said that issuing of unique disability identity card to persons with disabilities is to encourage transparency, efficiency and ease imbursement of government benefits to the deserving people and to ensure uniformity. The project will also help in streamlining tracking of physical and financial progress of beneficiaries at all levels of hierarchy of implementation – from village level, block level, district level, state level and national level, she informed.

Stating that there is scholarship scheme for pre-metric (class 9-10), post metric (class 11-12) and post-graduation, she urged the PwDs to avail the benefits which can be applied online.

Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung Limawabang said that International Day of Persons with Disabilities is a good opportunity to raise awareness and educate the people about PwDs. He also assured that all schemes and programmes for PwDs will be implemented judiciously in the district and will continue to supports their rights.

Rev. Dr. Mar Atsongchanger, executive secretary of ABAM, asserted that “we should continue to care and support our Divyang sisters and brothers because unless we care and support them we are also disabled.” He added that ‘the world has more disabled people today because of prejudice and vice versa among the abled persons’ and that there is ‘no margin’ for PwDs or abled person in the eyes of the Almighty.

In this connection, the reverend said that in order to enable PwDs excel, every individual should consider plans that will help the PwDs in all infrastructural developments, change attitude towards them.

The event was organised by Mokokchung District Disabled Forum, Care & Support Society, Grace Society in collaboration with Mokokchung District Legal Services Authority on the theme, “Promoting the participation of PwDs and their leadership, taking action on the 2030 development agenda”
