The otherwise dull-looking Dimapur railway station, today wears a new look with artworks about Naga’s rich culture and tradition adorning the walls and interiors of the only railway station in Nagaland.
The change has caught the attention of the minister of Railways and Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal. “With an innovatively designed building adorned with tribal art and unique nursery in the waiting room, the Dimapur railway station of Nagaland has one of the most eco-friendly and modern facilities for passengers,” he tweeted on Wednesday.
The public art work inspired by Naga tradition and culture was done by Naga sculptor Akup Buchem, who is also a recipient of Nagaland Governor Award 2010, with the help of his students from Wotsa Fine Art and Training Institute Dimapur — Rahul Alam, Kiutsumong K Yimchunger, Ito S Chophy and Chingyapalm Phom — and nine other labourers.
Buchem told Eastern Mirror that the work is a low relief sculpture made of concrete and paints with oil paint. He said the work began on Dec. 6, 2019 and completed on Jan. 15.
The bespoke public art by Buchem has beautified the railway station, giving the travellers an insight into Naga’s rich tradition and culture through his sculptures of ‘Naga festival’, ‘Naga warrior’, ‘Naga traditional kitchen’, ‘Naga blacksmith’, ‘hornbill’; ‘mithun head’, ‘a kid of present generation watching over old traditions’ and Indian railways logo, to name a few.
