Dimapur, Jan. 31: Even after a ban was enforced in May last year to disallow movement of heavy trucks through the Bailey Bridge over Chathe River in 4th Mile, some truck drivers seem to pay no heed.

A resident of a village in the area told Eastern Mirror that trucks commute across the Bailey Bridge especially at night occasionally, despite the ban.

The executive engineer of PWD (R&B) Talitemsu Jamir said that schools in the area have requested the department to allow school buses through the bridge.

“After the schools requested, we raised the overhead bars by 2 more inches so that school buses can pass through,” he said.

According to Jamir, the department had asked the council to be vigilant of ‘such activities.’ He informed that the residents ‘took the initiative’ to seize trucks caught crossing the bridge.

Another PWD official said that if something were to happen to the bridge, several villages in the area would suffer. “The new bridge will take some more time to complete. Until then the Bailey Bridge is the only way to get across.”

The department has requested the commissioner of police (SP Traffic), Dimapur to continue deployment of traffic personnel. It further requested the chairmen and GBs of surrounding areas to continue their support.
