Damage is Already Done

In a democracy, every political party or leader aspires for popular support. But this aspiration should be based on policy, programme and performance. No one should judge popularity over dead bodies. It’s a cardinal sin. Unfortunately, some of our leaders have committed the sin in wake of Pulwama terror attack and subsequent happenings. The moment our brave pilots destroyed terror camps across the border in a pre emptive non-military strike, those leaders came out with their calculations on popularity. In this context, senior BJP leader and former Karnataka chief minister B. S. Yeddyurappa was the worst offender. Encouraged by the support the air strike at Balakot in Pakistan generated, the BJP leader on camera commented that his party would win 22 out of 28 parliamentary seats in Karnataka in the forthcoming general elections. Though he denied the comment later, the damage was already done.

No words are sufficient to condemn the tragic and barbaric attack of security forces at Pulwama. Following the incident, entire world stood by India’s side and acknowledged the country’s right to take steps in self defence. New Delhi did just that. India didn’t declare war against Pakistan. Based on specific information, it only destroyed terror camps situated in the border. There were no civilian casualties. Not a single military government installation was damaged. Countries like America, Israel did the same earlier. Similarly, by carrying out the air strike, India has shown its strength to the terrorists. The strike carried a simple message for the terrorists. The enemies of humanity will not be safe anywhere in the world if they attack India. India will take every possible step to wipe out terrorism from its root.

But the comment of Yeddyurappa has definitely diluted and damaged the Indian cause. Overlooking the stern message delivered by India, the manner he gleefully came out with his predictions about the outcome of the poll is bound to raise doubts in the minds of the people. Was he rejoicing the loss of over 40 brave soldiers? Former chief minister’s comment was so irresponsible that his party colleague and a former general himself, Union Minister V. K. Singh rubbished the senior leader and delinked the party from the statement. It may be mentioned here that as soon as the Pulwama attack happened, opposition parties declared that at the hour of grief and crisis they would be solidly behind the government. A new entrant to politics Priyanka Gandhi had cancelled her first interaction with the media.

Sadly, Yeddyurappa was not the only one who made such comments. There are few more leaders from both the ruling and opposition camps, who indulged such thoughts. As the general elections are nearing, it is the best opportunity to dump those leaders who put personal gains ahead of national interest. The Election Commission should also keep a close eye on these leaders, so that they cannot use the issue for political gains. Everyone should keep in mind that election is a political battle and it should be fought staying within that ambit. Don’t allow anyone to use nationalism as a tool to garner votes. Don’t belittle the bravery and sacrifices of our soldiers.
