The solo project of Sahej Bakshi, ‘Dualist Inquiry’ has been garnering audiences not just in India but across the world for a while now, and Nagaland was lucky enough to have the musician perform at the ‘Red Bull’ night during the Hornbill Music Festival on December 5.

The versatile and gifted artiste is a producer, composer and multi-instrumentalist who creates mostly ambient electronic music and makes one familiarise with its beat and groove instantly.

Eastern Mirror caught up with the multi-talented artist for a quick chat before his performance at Agri Expo in Dimapur.

While using the moniker ‘Dualist Inquiry,’ one might wonder why the name. Bakshi said he was having fun with ideas and concepts during his teenage years, and the philosophy of dualism always fascinated him, hence the name.

Having started music at the tender age of nine, Bakshi jumped into experimenting and producing electronic music at the age of 20 in his college dorm in Los Angeles, USA and never looked back.

With a deep dedication and passion for what he does, Dualist Inquiry was appreciative and happy that the region has huge fans of music of all kinds and genres. When asked if he was apprehensive about his genre and the audience in Dimapur being receptive to it, Bakshi said that he always keeps an open mind and improvises his sets according to the connection of him and the audience.

“I adapt and adjust my music in that moment according to what I feel the audience is feeling,” said Bakshi adding that the most important part about his performances is the audience.

Being a food lover, the artist shared that he had never been to Nagaland before this, and was looking forward to the food and culture the most.

“Nagaland has a unique culture with massive potential; I feel the new generation will build upon new sounds with already existing music from here,’ said Bakshi.

While the road to success for many musicians can be slow for some or even nonexistent to many after many struggles, the musician agreed that it is tough to be a musician. Nevertheless, he also reiterated and stressed that the only push to make one continue is the love for music.

“Once you are a musician, giving up shouldn’t be an option,” he said.

Speaking about the music scene in the country, Bashi felt that Hip-Hop is one of the biggest genres hitting the industry at the moment, though he personally felt that he wouldn’t go on that track for now.

“We need to keep learning and picking up skills as we move along,” said Bakshi, who is also donning on his visual art by making some of his own music videos.

Dualist Inquiry has recently released an EP called ‘Life Forms.’
