Armed miscreants torch houses in Manipur

Dimapur, Sep. 17: Around 100 unidentified miscreants from Maram Khullen Circle Union entered Makhan Khuman village area in Senapati district, Manipur and burnt down houses at around 4.30 am on Tuesday, according to DP Thaoveiwo, sub-inspector of Mao police station.

The incident is related to a land dispute, it was informed.

As per the police, around 19 houses including shops and rice hotels were burnt down, and vast properties destroyed. The incident took place when the residents were sleeping; the miscreants pelted stones at the houses and set fire using kerosene. Some of the residents sustained minor injuries.

He also informed that the miscreants came with guns and automatic weapons and resorted to blank firing. Some miscreants were in “camouflage uniform” and fled after burning down the houses, he added.

Though no FIR has been filed, till the filing of this report, police will be taking sou moto action, it was informed.

“We condemn in the highest term this barbaric and savage act. It is much uncivilised,” said Lokho Ozho, general secretary of Mao Council. He also added that some district officials visited the scene and guaranteed to help the victims within 72 hours.

A press release from Northern Maram People’s Organisation stated that Tuesdays incident was caused due to land disputes between Maram Khullen and Makhan Khuman, which has been going on for a long time.
