Members of the ANCSU undertook an “education tour” from February 11 to the 13th during which they visited various educational institutes as part of the organisation’s first-phase tour, updates stated.

Dimapur, Feb. 16 (EMN): The All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) has “observed that many private colleges are performing much better than the government colleges and they have been equally contributing towards the growth of quality and higher education.”

For this reason, the union has appealed to the education authorities to identify colleges that are performing well, and to encourage them through financial aid and recognition.

The ANCSU undertook an “education tour” from February 11 to the 13th. The first phase of the tour was to Khelhoshe Polytechnic at Atoizu, Tuli College in Mokokchung, People’s College in Mokokchung, and the Institute of Communication and Information Technology (ICIT) at Mokokchung, the press release stated.

The ANCSU issued a press release to the media on Sunday informing about the tour.

“The ANCSU is touring the colleges to know the grievances, problems and concerns of the students in particular and the college/institute at large. As a part of the education tour, the union has sensitized the students about the various scholarship schemes available, the guidelines and criteria to apply for the scholarship, and other necessary information related to availing scholarships.”

The union has appealed to students “who are not entitled to availing the scholarship not to apply and further challenged the students to say ‘no’ to corruption from this kind of renouncement.”

The organisation expressed ‘regrets’ that “many students who are availing scholarships are not aware of the guidelines and the appropriate schemes to apply for scholarships and many were victimized for applying in wrong schemes.”

In its endeavour to streamline the various scholarship schemes available for the state of Nagaland, the union said it was “able to detect at least 18 kinds of scholarship schemes scattered in various departments.”

The ANCSU has proposed setting up a common “nodal” cell to implement “all kinds of scholarship schemes” and to which the state government has “already notified” for the establishment of the cell, the press release stated.

The union also appealed to the students’ fraternity to “make optimum use of smartphones and internet by visiting the scholarship websites for necessary information.”

During the visit, the ANCSU members “observed that many private colleges are performing much better than the government colleges and they have been equally contributing towards the growth of quality and higher education.”

The union appealed to the “concerned department” and the state government to identify outstanding, performing colleges and encourage them through financial aid and recognition.

During their visit to ICIT at Mokokchung, the union “could ascertain that despite the quality infrastructures available, the meagre (sic) students’ enrolment was a serious concern.”

The institute at present offers three diploma programmes in the area of computer engineering, information technology and electronics and communication engineering approved by the All India Council for Technical Education.

‘The institute is also permitted to offer skills-training / upgrade courses and organise technology transfer programmes for the rural community. Despite these many courses available, many remain unknown to these courses,’ the union stated.

The organisation has appealed to the government authorities to organise workshops and seminars and ‘adopt wide publicity’ among high school and higher secondary student sections.

Fund misuse

The ANCSU visited Khelhoshe Polytechnic at Atoizu (KPA) and was “dejected to learn that the long pending demand of the students for the creation of police outpost still remained a ‘fairy tale assurance’” from the state’s government.

“The ANCSU has also been demanding the creation of police outpost for the welfare of the student’s community at KPA, however, the negligence of the state government is being felt again,” the organisation stated.

“The union, in strong resentment against the state government, conveys that in the rise of any mischief against the students and faculty, the state government shall be held responsible for not establishing the police outpost despite repeated plea.”

‘While touring the polytechnic institutes, the union has detected that the infrastructure and other developments are undertaken were unsatisfactory in many of the polytechnic institutes. While the polytechnic institutes were granted sufficient funds to establish, renovate and upgrade the institutes, yet the amount of work done was unjust.’

The ANCSU, while affirming to fight “against those evils,” demanded that the “concern minister and the concerned department” constitute a commission immediately to probe into the misuse of funds, the press release stated.

During the first phase of education tour, the union also highlighted and discussed matters relating to exams, issuance of students documents, and other grievance of the students, the union stated.
