Agartala, March 14 (PTI): The International Internet Gateway (IIG) in Agartala through Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh was not being used in the best possible way due to technical problems, Tripura Assembly was informed today.
“The Agartala IIG has a capacity of using 10 GB bandwith through Cox’s Bazar, but it is now using only 6.1 GB.
The reason is Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN) was not installed here by the central government,” Information and Technology Minister Tapan Chakraborty said.
Mobile phone customers of the north eastern states could enjoy full service of the IIG had the machine been installed here, he said.Despite the state government’s request, the Centre did not install the device which would cost Rs 300 crore.
Chakraborty said, international Internet traffic is sent through Agartala IIG, but the domestic traffic, which constitutes 60% of the total Internet traffic is sent through the old route of Guwahati Kolkata.
