Guwahati, April 21

Seven jihadis affiliated to Bangladesh-based terrorist group Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) have been arrested from western Assam’s Chirang district, police said on Thursday.
Two of those arrested on Wednesday night are imams (head priests) of a mosque, police said. They had set up a camp for imparting physical training to the outfit’s cadres.
The seven arrested on Wednesday night were identified as Joynal Abedin (32), Rezzak Ali (21), Soleman Ali (28), Dildar Ali (23), Md. Nurul Islam (27), Rafiqul Islam and Ukhiluddin (33).
Police said Joynal Abedin and Rezzak Ali were imams at the Amguri mosque.
On April 16, police from Chirang and Kokrajhar had arrested four jihadis who had also set up a camp in Chirang district. “We came to know about these people after the interrogation of the four jihadis arrested on April. With the arrest of the seven jihadis on Wednesday night, the total arrests in the state have gone up to 29,” said Inspector General of Police L.R. Bishnoi of the Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD).
“All these jihadis were operating in Assam under Bangladesh-based jihadi module JMB,” he said.
Bishnoi said they had set up a camp for imparting physical training and there were plans to impart arms training later.
“Two people came from West Bengal to impart training to the jihadis here. We have got their names and addresses and we are in touch with our counterparts in West Bengal to arrest them,” he said.
Police had last year arrested several jihadis operating under JMB in Chirang district, after receiving inputs that Islamist groups were recruiting Muslim youths in Chirang, Kokrajhar and Baksa districts of BTAD.
