12 Congress MLA’s tender resignation in Manipur

Imphal, May 29 (EMN): Twelve Congress MLAs taking moral responsibility of the party’s defeat in the recently concluded Lok Sabha election in Manipur have tendered resignation from their respective posts in the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC).

The 12 MLAs are Govindas Khonthoujam(chief whip), K Ranjit Singh(Treasurer), N Loken Singh(Vice President), Md Nasir(Vice President), DD Thaisii (Vice President), Kh Joykisan (Vice President), Fajur Rahim (Chairman minority cell), RK Imo Singh (General secretary), K Meghachandra Singh (General secretary), Chaltolian Amo (Vice President),Alfred K Athur (General secretary), and D. Korungthang (CLP secretary).

Congress MLA Govindas Khonthoujam led eight Congress MLAs announced the latest development of the party during a press conference at the Congress bhavan in Imphal on Wednesday.

MLAs N Loken, Dr Chaltolian, K Ranjit, Md Nasir, K Meghachandra, Kh Joykisan, and Th Lokeshwar were present during the press conference.

Participating in the press conference, Congress MLA K Ranjit said, “We resign from our respective posts (in the MPCC) so that we can take up party strengthening works in the grassroots level.”

MLA Ranjit also ruled out the question of joining any party as the steps was taken as a move to strengthen the party.

When sought his comment on whether their resignation papers will be accepted or not, MPCC President Gaikhangam who is also the sitting MLA from Nungba assembly constituency said the matter will be decided by the AICC.

However former deputy chief minister clarified that the resignation of the MLAs from their respective posts in MPCC is a kind of routine exercise to restructure and strengthen the party.

“I think this is happening in most of the states,” he said citing AICC President Rahul Gandhi’s move to step down as part president after the party’s defeat in the Lom Sabha elections. Rahul Gandhi took over the post of president from his mother Sonia Gandhi in December 2017.

In the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls, Congress lost both the two Lok Sabha seats (inner and outer Manipur) to BJP and Naga People’s Front candidates-Dr RK Ranjan and Dr Lorho Pfoze. In 2014, Dr Th Meinya and Thangso Baite bagged both the seats.
