Zasinihu memorial trophy begins at Jotsoma

Phoenix FC, JSU and TSU through to next round

Kohima, Nov. 15 (EMN): The 4th edition of Zasinihu Memorial Trophy, being organised by Western Angami Students’ Union (WASU), commenced today at the Jotsoma village ground.
A total of 18 teams from all the villages under Western Angami region are participating in the four-day tournament which will culminate on Nov. 18. The inaugural function was graced by Kevisekho Kruse, Retd Chief Engineer, PHED, Government of Nagaland, as the chief guest.
In his address, Kruse lauded WASU for taking the effort to organise a football trophy in memory of late Zasinihu, who served as the first president of Naga Students’ Federation. Lt. Zasinihu, who hails from Khonoma village, died very early at the age of 29.
“While remembering him (Zasinihu) with this prestigious trophy, let us also look upon his ideals and principles, for which he stood firmly for the Naga society during his lifetime,” Kruse said.
While encouraging the aspiring sportspersons to partake in sports activities with all seriousness, he urged them to fully commit themselves to sports with the attempt to make it as a career.
“Do not undermine the privileges and benefits that come through sports. Strive with determination to reach the highest level, be it national or international event,” Kruse said.
On issues concerning the Western Angami region, he urged the youth and students to take responsibility on any challenges that comes their way.
“Youths and students are the future of our society. Therefore, let us encourage one another to contribute for the well being of our people and society,” he stated.
Meanwhile in the first match played today, the defending champions Phoenix FC beat Kiruphema Students’ Union 1-0 to advance to the next round, while Jotsoma Students’ Union trounced Hooligans FC 3-1 to progress ahead.
In the third match, Thekrejuma Students’ Union also made it through to the next round with their victory against Mengujuma Students’ Union 1-0.
