YWCA holds 1st NE regional conference

Dimapur, Jan. 20 (EMN): Young Women Christian Association (YWCA) has held its 1st northeast regional conference in YWCA’s Fair Haven hall, Shillong, on January 17 and 18 on the theme “Women against violence.” The conference shed light on various issues that women face in their day to day life and aimed at finding a solution by using various strategies.

Watisenla Jamir, president of Dimapur YWCA, stated that 35 participants from various affiliated associations and Group in Formation (GiFs) from the northeast attended the conference. She added that participants from three clusters namely Shillong, Guwahati, Chabua and Tezpur comprising cluster 1, Aizawl, Champhai, Lunglei, Saiha comprising cluster-2, and Dimapur, Mokokchung, Dimapur III and Jorhat comprising cluster -3 attended the conference. Each affiliated associations and GiF’s presented report about the programmes and activities in their regions.

On January 17, Ms Vinodhini Moses, YWCA national general secretary, explained about the “Vision of YWCA,” which is “to empower women at all levels for justice.” She explicated that “The mission of YWCA” is to reach out to victims of economic and social injustice manipulated by socio-religious and political power. She also emphasised the need of involvement on issues.

A historical overview on the YWCA was also delivered by Ms Kalpana David, YWCA national assistant general secretary.

On January 18, Ms Vinodhini Moses spoke about creating safe spaces for young as well as working-women by providing hostel facilities which are safer than the ordinary paying guest (PG) houses.

An action plan for 2018-2022 was also finalised for the future aspect of YWCA.
