World Food Day observed in Mokokchung

Mokokchung, Oct. 16 (EMN): The Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA), Mokokchung with Rotary Club, Mokokchung jointly celebrated World Food Day 2018 on the 16th October 2018 with the school students of Mayangnokcha Government Higher Secondary School, Mokokchung on October 15. The event was observed on the theme “Our Actions are Our Future: Connecting Young Minds with Farming”.


The event was organized to raise awareness among the young minds on the problems of food insufficiency in the country and provide a better understanding on the importance of avoiding food wastage.


Understanding that preventing food wastage is the key to food sufficiency and realizing that the importance of food wastage should be taught right at a young age, the students were taught on the amount of labour put into by a farmer to get a plate of rice and also about where and how food is grown.
Also deeply considering the rate at which the farming population is drastically decreasing, the event was organized to make the students build interest in farming activities.


Technical expert for the programme, P. Sakotsungba Longchar, Assistant Technology Manager, ATMA, Longchem block gave hands-on practical classes on the maintenance of the school vegetable garden. They were given practical learning experiences on how to grow simple crops such as garden pea, beans, mustard and coriander.


The students were also provided with farm equipment, farm soil fertility inputs and seeds of vegetable crops.
Earlier, Sentinenla, Principal, Mayangnokcha Government Higher Secondary School delivered the welcome address while Allan Mark Secretary, Rotary Club, Mokokchung gave the programme highlight.


The programme was chaired by Ningshiyangerla Walling, Assistant Technology Manager, ATMA, Tsurangkong Block and Rongsennungla Imchen, Dy. P.D., ATMA, Mokokchung acknowledged the participants. About seventy-six students along with other officials and staff from ATMA and Rotary Club attended the programme.
