World Day Against Child Labour: Dimapur’s DC urges safety for vulnerable children

Dimapur, June 12 (EMN): The Community Educational Centre Society (CECS) Dimapur observed the World Day Against Child Labour on June 12 at the CEC School campus in Dimapur, with this year theme “Generation Safe a Healthy.”
The chief guest for the event, Deputy Commissioner Dimapur Sushil Kumar, acknowledged and appreciated the CECS for their continuous role and contribution in raising activism and awareness to eradicate child labour in the society. Update received from the organizers on Tuesday informed.
Dimapur being a district with number of migrants, he said ‘children are the most affected during migration’ as poor families migrate to urban areas such as Dimapur in search of earning prospect. He lamented that the impediment of child labour was not only confined to Nagaland and India alone but the world in general and it has become a need of the hour to address this burning issue.
He urged the gathering to make use of the police helpdesk and child helpline numbers. He also asked the NCLP project director and other agencies to share the cases of children in vulnerable situations with the appropriate authority. He reiterated that such reporting was not to be used for arresting or taking actions but rather to take further steps to counsel the victims and family members and to create awareness. He assured the support of the district administration in every possible manner.

Book on child labour case in Dimapur released
On the occasion, DC also released a book called “Exploring Vulnerable Children: A case of child labour in Dimapur,” written by Director CECS Subonenba Longkumer. He congratulated the author on the successful release of the book.
According to a press release from the CECS, the book highlights some important aspects on the issue of child labour with special focus on the marginalized children in Dimapur and Nagaland in general. The study details out legislative measures and constitutional provisions. The book also provides systematic documentation of marginalized children’s’ magnitude in the area of study.
The author is also the nodal director of Childline 1098, Nagaland and is also the governing board member of Childline India Foundation. The author said it was a long cherished dream to write a book based on his lifelong work with marginalized children.
Lhangti Konyak highlighted the role played by the NCLP in addressing child Labour and also the rehabilitation aspects carried out through the project.
The District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) of Mokokchung observed the World Day Against Child Labour under the theme “Child labour: A Major challenge,” at Penli community hall in Mokokchung on June 12. A sensitization programme on Integrated Child Protection Scheme (ICPS) was also conducted alongside.
The speaker in the programme, the chairperson of the Child Welfare Committee, Dr. Imlirenla Walling, said that children are the future generation therefore they should be protected from all evils of the society.
“We all must fight against child labour and child abuse in any manner where child’s right to survive, protect and participation is deprived,” he said.
She said to uphold the Child’s Right provision is very important under the Integrated Child Protection Scheme adding that the government has also signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on the scheme.
To mark the occasion, debate was conducted on the topic “Child labour is better than living in poverty,” with Queen Mary Higher Secondary School for motion and Jubilee Memorial School against motion.
Also, the students of Christian Movement of India (SCMI) Northeast zone-II observed the World Day Against Child Labour with the theme “Advocacy on Child Labour.” The programme was organized in collaboration with the Bridge of Hope Ministry.
