Workshop on water conservation under MGNREGA held

Imphal, May 12 (EMN): Convergence of the schemes, shifting of approach from Crisis Management to Resources Management to prevent crisis in future are the main highlights of the day long workshop on Mission Water Conservation-Natural Resource Management under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGA) within the overall framework of Prime Minister Krishi Sinchayee Yojana.

The workshop was held under aegis of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Department, Government of Manipur with the main aim of facilitating interdepartmental convergences centre around MGNREGS here on Friday.

In his speech Chief Secretary Nabakishore said he would like to appeal to the masses including the elected members to adopt new techniques for water management in the state.

Questioning the actual implementation of water conservation measures at the ground level in the State, he said that efforts for the task at hand should start at the grassroots level by adopting innovative methods like digging a pond even in the hills if the public are to witness a long-lasting change.

Stating that the benefits of other schemes should be integrated while implementing one particular scheme, Under secretary (MGNREGA) Rajeev Sharma said, “71 out of 100 National Resource Management projects (under MGNREGA),relates with water conservation or management projects including ground water recharge, flood protection, a forestation, rain-water harvesting, soil and moisture conservation etc.”

Madhya Pradesh has done wonderful work in converging NREGA programme and Prime Minister Gram Sadak Yojana.

Pankaj Shrikant Duberkar and Sonal Kulshrestha gave presentation on “Works under Convergence with MGNREGA.

Earlier in his welcome note, Secretary (RD& PR) Sumant Singh said the workshop has been in the pipeline for quite a long time and that all departments concerned with taking up the task of mission water conservation are invited. He said, “MNREGA is supposed to provide 100 days employment including supplying low-cost toilet at about Rs 20,000. All these programmes under MNREGA talk to each other in terms of their aims, objectives & structure but the implementers of these programs don’t talk to each other: not in a literal but in a metaphoric sense.
