KOHIMA, AUGUST 23: Following the introductory training on Participatory Land Use Planning (PLUP) held on August 22, it was recommended that PLUP and Land Use Committees (LUCs) in Nagaland be legally institutionalized.
This recommendation was made during the “consultative workshop” on the assessment of Participatory Land Use Planning (PLUP) was held today at De Oriental Grande, Kohima with Dr Andras Darabant, Documentation Specialist (International Consultant) as the facilitator.
The United National Development Programme and department of Soil and Water Conservation organized the workshop jointly.
The day long workshop was attended by heads of departments of the agriculture and its allied departments in the state. After thoroughly discussing on PLUP, the participants have also recommended for streamlining PLUP as a coordination platform to support agriculture and its allied departments for rural communities.
Officials who were present during the event suggested that departmental support should be considered only on basis of zone-wise action plans, and that it should form ‘jhum resources management committee’ at the district level consisting of departments and administration. Similar structures should be constituted at the state level, they suggested.
Emphasizing on the need to raise public awareness on PLUP, it was also recommended that LUCs should be trained and enriched by technical expertise of departments especially on soil mapping and GIS.
The participants have also felt the need to for capacity building on PLUP for field staff of the agri and allied departments, while also establishing funding mechanism for LUCs and JRMC.
Meanwhile, Dr Andras highlighted the status of the PLUP in Nagaland in Mokokchung, Mon, and Wokha district.
