Governor of Nagaland & Assam, PB Acharya has said that May Day, also known as International Workers’ Day and Labour Day in some places, is a celebration of labourers and the working classes that is promoted by the international labour movement every year on 1st May.
The governor in his message on May Day said, “The date was chosen for International Workers’ Day by the Second International to commemorate the Haymarket affair, which occurred in Chicago on 4 May 1886. This day has its origin in the labour union movement, specifically the eight-hour day movement, which advocated eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation and eight hours for rest.”
The governor further said, “Workers are creators of wealth in every field of life. Work is worship. Exploitation of workers is a crime and is inhuman. We should respect them and have parity in our behaviour with them.”
The governor has also appealed to all labour organisations to contribute towards building a ‘Swachh’, ‘Samriddh’ ‘Shashakt’ and ‘Niryog’ Bharat.
