Dimapur, May 17 (EMN):
Assisi Centre for Integrated Development (ACID) – cum- National Domestic Workers Movement (NDWM) Nagaland Region has organised an awareness programme on gender-based violence for domestic workers at Kuda ‘A’ Khel on May 17.

Resource person, Advocate Limanochet, legal advisor of the All Nagaland Domestic Workers Union, explained on the negative effects of gender-based violence both at the place of work and home.

He explained that gender-based violence is a form of abuse in which women finds it difficult to express because of the fear of losing the job or because of self respect. He encouraged women to come out of that situation and express to someone who could help them.

He informed the domestic workers that they have National Domestic Workers Movement and also a union. He encouraged them to build trust and work for the common good. Now that the domestic workers have formed into union, he said they have a bargaining power and also platform to share their grievances.

In conclusion, he made them know the benefits of forming a union and their responsibility to work together by supporting one another.

Sr. Pramila, NDWM state coordinator, explained to the new registered members the definition of domestic work and who are domestic workers. Besides, she explained the four pillars namely dignity, respect, empowerment and justice and the need to work together.

Grace, NDWM staff, explained on the domestic workers’ rights and the roles in the union.

Altogether, 35 persons participated in the programme.
