Winners of painting competition on energy conservation feted

KOHIMA, NOVEMBER 9: Michael Yeptho of St. Mary Higher Secondary School in Dimapur has been declared the winner of a state-level painting competition on energy conservation in category ‘A.’

The painting competition was conducted under the National Campaign on energy conservation, Ministry of Power, Government of India at War Cemetery, Kohima. It was organised by North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) in collaboration with Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), government of Nagaland and Nagaland State Designated Agency (NSDA).

Olivile H Yepthomi from Holy Cross Higher Secondary School of Dimapur and Touzolu Rhakho from Livingstone Foundation Higher Secondary School of Dimapur were declared second and third winners.

In category ‘B’ Mathiurengabou Poumai from Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya of Jalukie in Peren district was declared the first. S Imnatsudong Longkumer from El Shaddai Academy of Dimapur and Dzüzeho Soleho from Azedon School of Kohima were adjudged the second and third winners, in that order.

Addressing the closing ceremony of the event as its chief guest, commissioner-secretary FP Solo urged the students to be innovative and use their creative talents to bring changes to the society especially in the field of conservation, regeneration and sustainable development.

Stressing on the need for conservation of flora and fauna, Solo asserted that measures should be taken to prevent further depletion of the environment. They may contribute to conservation by planting trees and ‘living consciously and wisely,’ he said.

The official also appreciated the organisers of the competition. Such platforms enable the children to showcase their talents and creativity, he said.

Winners from the categories were awarded with a citation each besides cash awards of Rs 20,000, Rs 15,000, and Rs 10,000, in that order; Rs 5000 each was given away to ten consolation winners and Rs 2000 to each of the 94 participants.

The painting competition was conducted with the themes ‘saving energy is generating energy’, ‘for better tomorrow, save energy’ and ‘save energy, get wealthy’.

It was informed that winners of the category ‘A’ will be representing Nagaland at the national-level painting competition that is scheduled to be held on December 12, 2016 at Delhi.

The themes will be decided by the ministry of Power. The paintings of the category ‘B’ winners will be sent to the BEE for selection for the national level prizes as well.

The award for winners of the national painting competition carries a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh for the first-place winner, Rs 50,000 for the second (four slots), Rs 25,000 for the third (eight slots) and Rs 10,000 to ten consolation winners.
