The 20th general conference of the apex tribal organization representing the Ao Naga women, the Watsü Mungdang, commenced on Thursday evening in the town hall of Mokokchung with a solemn inauguration. Member-secretary of the Nagaland state Legal Service Authority Mayang Lima was the main speaker of the event. More than 2, 000 women dressed in traditional Ao Naga attire attended the first night of the conference.
Speaking on the topic ‘women and law (Yimkong Yongrak aser Temzüng ozüng)’, Mayang Lima said, “It’s time to stand up and speak out,” as the present was moving from government to governance. He asserted that “if people understand and respect the law then the law becomes more efficient”.
He said freedom and equality include affording opportunities to women on all fronts in political, social and economic, adding Women have absolute right to live with freedom and dignity.
Lima also listed out various schemes initiated by the government to empower women, affirm their rights as equal citizens, and ensure gender equality.
Also speaking during the event, the deputy commissioner of Mokokchung, Sushil Kumar Patel, lauded the Wastü Mungdang for their efforts to promote development and empowerment of women, especially their fight for justice for the fairer gender.
He urged the men to offer more support to women and to strengthen the coordination between two genders. “Women can do better in planning and fighting corruption in our society,” he said.
Delegates from 119 units from all across the state are currently camping in Mokokchung town for the conference. The event will conclude on April 24.
