Undergrounds, smugglers, and a potty truck: Heavy Saturday for police

The trend continues: Underground cadres are at it again. Enterprising commercial carriers are as usual running potty. Vehicles and bike stealers are as usual busy. Authorities in Dimapur and Kohima have made a number of arrests, including cadres of NSCN (IM) cadres, for an array of criminal activities during the week.
Dimapur and Kohima police authorities offered updates on Saturday through separate press releases.
In Dimapur, the police have arrested two “captain” of the underground group NSCN (IM) on charges of withholding ownership of a truck in demand for a payment of Rs. 3 lakh. Dimapur police issued a press release stating the case on November 28.
On November 26, the police said, personnel of zone-1 Dimapur police arrested two persons identified as one “captain” PS Aleng and another “captain” Max Lolly of the ‘NSCN/GPRN(IM)’ from the Blue Hill Station area in Dimapur.
“They were involved in snatching the ignition keys and documents of a Manipur bound Taxi (winger) and were demanding Rs. 300000 (three lakhs) for its release. Acting on the information, the Anti-Extortion Team came upon the miscreants when they came forward to receive the money. However, when asked to surrendered, they tried to open fire but was subdued by the team,” the police said.
“One .32 pistol with 06 rounds, 06 bottles of Cough Syrup and the snatched items were seized from their possession. A case has been registered at Dimapur East Police Station for further investigation,” the press release added.
Youths catch vehicle thieves
Also, Dimapur has informed that two persons trying to steal vehicles have been caught. On November 27, village youth volunteers of Phaipijang apprehended two persons, allegedly caught red-handed trying to steal a motorbike and an auto rickshaw.
“They were handed over to the police subsequently. The two arrested persons have been identified as: Rafiq Ali, s/o Abdul Ali of Chaparmukh village under Nagaon, Assam and Md.Jahur Ali, s/o Surus Ali of Razoli village under Nagaon , Assam,” the Dimapur police stated in the press release.
“Implements for the commission of the crime were also seized from them. A case has been registered in East Police Station for further investigation,” the police added.
Unidentified dead body found
An unidentified dead body of a non-Naga male aged around 60 years has been found. The police said on Saturday that the body was found on November 28 from the New Fly over area in Dimapur.
“The deceased is appears to have been ill before dead. The dead body is kept in the district hospital for necessary formalities. For more details, please contact the East Police Station,” the press release from the Dimapur authorities stated.
Potty LPG carrier empties tummy
The police establishment of Kohima has confiscated what the authorities estimated to be cannabis worth at least 79 lakh. Kohima police said in a press release on Saturday, November 28, that 1, 400 kilograms of ganja was found packed in an oil tanker. A person has been arrested in this connection.
On November 27, police said, personnel of Kohima Police manning Khuzama inter-state Check Gate were conducting routine checking of vehicles when they “noticed an unusual movement of an LPG carrier “escorted by the armed 109 CRPF Battalion.”
The truck bore the registration number MN-03T-1094.
“…when the tanker was asked to stop at Khuzama inter-state check gate, the said vehicle sped away from the inter-state check gate. However, after a hot pursuit the LPG bullet tanker was intercepted near Viswema village, Kohima,” the authorities said.
“During preliminary enquiry the driver of the vehicle was thoroughly examined and he has voluntarily disclosed that the said vehicle was carrying contraband ganja.”
Based on his statement the vault of the LPG bullet tanker was unbolted. The police have recovered 1, 400 kilograms of ganja that was by the estimate of the police worth Rs. 70 lakh in the national market. The contraband was found neatly wrapped in 70 packets each weighting 20 kilograms, the police said.
The driver of the LPG carrier has been identified as one Khuraijam Denesh Singh, a 42-year-old from west Imphal of Manipur. He has been taken into police custody and the vehicle has been seized along with the ganja, the police said.
“In this connection, a regular case vide Khuzama PS Case No. 0048/15 U/S 20 (b)(ii) (c) NDPS Act was registered against him for conducting further investigation,” the press release added.
Driver of funny Bolero detained
Kohima police have detained the driver of a Mahindra Bolero pick-up the documentation details of which the authorities said were tampered.
On November 25, Kohima police manning Phesama check gate stopped the Bolero Pick-up on suspicion. The vehicle bore the registration number NL-04D-4855.
“During physical verification of the vehicle the chassis number was found to be tampered and the engine number engraved on the aluminum plate on the body did not tally with the engine number engraved in the engine,” the Kohima police said.
The driver of the vehicle was identified as one Bhim Bahadur, a 62-year-old man from Signal Bosti of Dimapur. He was taken into police custody, the police stated.
“In this connection a regular case vide Kohima South P.S case No. 0124/15 U/S 471/379 IPC is registered against him for conducting further investigation,” the police said.
