Kohima, Jan. 17: The ongoing drama over the elections to urban local bodies turned uglier on the last date of withdrawal of nomination forms.

As per reports reaching here, Phek district is undergoing a tense situation following the imposition of section 144 CrPc by the district administration there.

Strictly adhering to its standing resolution, the Chakhesang Public Organisation (CPO) Tuesday reportedly excommunicated eight NPF intending candidates who failed to withdraw their nomination papers till today, the last date of withdrawal of nomination forms. All eight of them were intending candidates to Phek Town Council.

The eight members have been banished by the CPO from Chakhesang region in Phek district with effect from Tuesday, January 17, for a period of seven years as per Chakhesang customary law.

One among them was Viketou Nienu, son of Vekusa Nienu of Sohomi village. The order was issued by CPO president Kekhwengulo Lea and general secretary Mustivoyi Kotso. The CPO expulsion order for the other seven candidates couldn’t be ascertained.

Following the failure of the intending candidates to stick to the CPO resolution and withdraw their nomination papers till the last hour today, some volunteers reportedly turned violent and even went to the extent of damaging the houses of some of the candidates who didn’t abide by the CPO resolution. It was reported that three houses were destroyed.

With the ugly turn of events, the deputy commissioner had imposed section 144 CrPc in Phek town this evening.
