Twin hill districts launch autonomous state stir in New Delhi

[caption id="attachment_155756" align="aligncenter" width="565"] A section of the demonstrators from the two hill districts of Assam demanding autonomous state in New Delhi on Tuesday.[/caption] Diphu , Dec. 19 (EMN): More than a thousand of people from the twin hill districts of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao from the state of Assam staged their demonstration at Ram Lila Maidan, New Delhi to pressurise the Central government to implement Article 244 (A) of the constitution for granting of Autonomous State for the hill districts of Assam, on Tuesday Dec. 19. The delegation was led by leaders of various youth, student and women organisations. The Karbi Anglong and North Cachar Hills Autonomous State Demand Committee (KANCHASDCOM), Karbi Students Association-Bijoy Bey, Karbi Riso Adorbar (KRA) and Karbi So-arlo Amei (KARSA) were in the forefront from Karbi Anglong. There were also delegations from the Joint Action Committee for Autonomous State and KLNLF. From Dima Hasao the delegation was under the banner of All Apex Body Coordination Committee, Dima Hasao comprising of 13 tribal organisations and 6 non tribal organisations. Talking to the media, president of KANCHASDCOM Ajit Timung said the demonstration started from 9 in the morning till 4 in the evening. According to Timung the total delegation was between 1600 to 2000. “The number of delegations would be more than 1600, but not exceeding 2000,” Timung told. During the demonstration the leaders of agitating organisations of the hill districts of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Union Home Minister for State Kiran Rijiju. The memorandum was received at the Prime Minister’s office, Timung informed over a telephonic conversation. “In the memorandum we have mentioned of only one point, that is the implementation of Article 244 (A) of the constitution for granting us the Autonomous State comprising the twin hill districts of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao. The leaders of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao have together submitted the memorandum,” Timung told. About the demonstration held today Timung said, “It was overwhelming, where people cutting across communities and language the people of both Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao from far away Assam have come to New Delhi to voice together for one issue, that is granting of Autonomous State. The demonstration with thousands of voices gave a strong impact to the Central government. The spirit of working together like today should carry forward in the coming days by being united the people of three hill districts of Assam and work together until our goal of achieving Autonomous State is achieved.” He also said there is no question of not getting the Autonomous State as it is a constitutional provision. MP Birensing Engti also participated in the demonstration but it was told, other elected representatives of KAAC and MLAs were not present.
