IMPHAL, April 12(EMN): Former Deputy Speaker of the Manipur legislative assembly T T Hangzalam Haokip was elected unanimously as Chairman of the Hill Areas Committee (HAC) on Wednesday.
Member of HAC and agriculture minister V Hangkhalian presided in the day’s election. The State Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren, Speaker of the assembly Yumnam Khemchand and other legislatures also attended the day’s election of new chairman of HAC, according to reports.
The banker turned politician popularly known as TT Haokip among the state’s political circles and media was first elected to Manipur legislative assembly on Manipur state congress party ticket in 1998 and subsequently elected as the Deputy Speaker.
Though he lost in the assembly elections held in 2000, 2002, 2007 and 2012 by a narrow margin to his rival congressman, he was elected in the recently concluded 11th assembly elections on a Bharatiya Janata Party ticket by defeating his nearest Congress candidate from Henglep constituency. HAC is a constitutional body under Article 371(C) of the constitution of India.
