Road accidents, a common disaster occurring around the world, are one of the major concerns of the people in every society.
Road accidents can be categorized in many ways.
Reckless driving, drunken driving and technical reasons are some that can actually be avoided if sense of responsibility and ‘love for life’ are encouraged among the drivers.
Dimapur traffic police on observing the growing number of accidents in the city have launched the ‘breathalyzer’ a device for estimating blood alcohol content from a breath sample.
Since its launch, the traffic police have been actively involved in checking the drivers within the city.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) (Traffic Zone-1), Sezo along with his team tested the drivers during the evening hours in Dimapur at City Tower Junction on Saturday.
Out of the many tested, few were detected to be driving under the influence of alcohol. The detected persons were provided with chalans of the report generated by the device while warning them of the dangers involved in drink and driving.
ACP said that the team over the past few days has mainly been focusing on the taxi drivers who go to Kohima. He said some who were driving above the limited intake has been taken to the police station and has been discharged after several warnings.
The vehicle accidents record from January 2015 to September 2015 provided by the ‘Traffic Police Dimapur’ shows that as many as 294 out of which 164 cases have been due to drunken driving. The table also shows that 34 deaths are involved in the accidents while 16 deaths are causes of drunken driving.
‘Alcohol Breath Analyzer’ that detects the alcohol content in blood is considered an offence if a person is caught exceeding 30 mg per 100ml of blood.
During the raid, the traffic team led by Sezo also warned the bikers who were riding without helmet while showing concern for their safety.
The team plans to conduct such surprise drive within the city in order to avoid accidents that are caused because of drunken driving.
