Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

Matthew 5:5

The virtue of meekness is evident only in those who has self control. In our modern English idiom the word meek is hardly one of the honorable words of life. It portrays the picture of a submissive and ineffective creature. I would describe meekness as a form of humility which is best seen in the life of a humble person. The word meekness is hardly heard these days because the persons with such qualities are few in number. The persons who possesses the virtue of meekness are the blessed ones among the blessed. These are the people who finds favor in God’s eyes. Just because a person is meek it does not necessarily mean that he or she is always in control of his or her actions. A meek person can also explode in anger during the course of a heated argument in which the emotional outburst of the person is evidenced. A meek person is compared with a person who is stable in all of his or her ways. However in the heat of a moment there are chances that a person may do something which may least be expected of them. As far as my understanding of it is concerned I had witnessed several such instances.A meek person will not hesitate in admitting their own weaknesses. For the meek knows that the first step to learning is the realization of their own ignorance. Something unique and something likable are what we see in a meek person. What appeals to us is their humility. Unless we are controlled by humility we will be bonded by the bondage of pride.

The thing that made Moses into a great personality was because of the likable qualities he possessed. It was not by the virtue of what he was but it was by the virtue of what God saw in him.

Though he faltered as they neared the Promised Land, he was still grateful as he awaited his fate. Had he being rebellious he would have grumbled against God for denying him to enter the Promised Land. Though the mistake he committed was done in frustration, the virtue of calmness which he possessed was ever present in him. For a man who considered as unreliable and inferior to many became a great leader to many. In the book of Numbers it was recorded that Moses was the meekest man on earth. Numbers 12:3. he was made great to be an example to all of us. Though he considered himself as inferior to the rest, he trusted in the one that commissioned him. As a result of this he became the blessed among the blessed because of what he was.

In addition to this the lovable and admirable characteristics Jesus portrayed during the course of His ministry became a source of inspiration to many. He was not only the blessed one of God but He was also the one through whom many were blessed. The saints, the martyrs and all of His dedicated followers followed in His footstep. Even in the midst of persecution and humiliation He remained peaceful and calm through out the trail. His adversary the devil would have expected Him to speak in His defense, but He proved him wrong by completing the task that was assigned. The success of His mission was the result of His meekness.

A sacrifice as great as this will never be repeated neither will it be forgotten. But it will always be a source of inspiration to many. The sacred word the meek shall inherit the earth is as inspiring as the Word itself. It is a virtue which is rare, which as a result is summarized in a single sentence. In His own words Jesus spoke about the glory that will be bestowed on the deserving children. Only the meek shall receive what was promised. The beauty of it is seen in a person who has this quality. Its not only a virtue which is likable but it is also a virtue which will be rewarding. To be bestowed with the honor of inheriting the earth is an honor in itself. Something which we have to be aware of is that the more simple we become, the greater will be our reward in heaven. It is a promise not by man but by God. It is a gift not by virtue but by grace. To be beneficiaries of the promise, our life should be governed by what the Word teaches us. If meekness is what the Lord wants of us, we should become what the Lord wants us to be. Everything that is written is for our own edification, lest we comply with it, we will never reap the benefits of it. Something which is said should be done, that His will be done on us.
