Dimapur, Feb. 24: Students of Modern College, Kohima, B.A. 6th Semester, Department of Environmental Science, during the environmental field study on the project topic “Developmental activities: It’s Impact on biological diversity in and around Khonoma village,” was pained to see the loss of rich biological diversity due to the widening of road deep into the sacred forest of Khonoma, which have been preserved and conserved for centuries.

The students stated that habitat destructions, fragmentation of habitat, deforestation, hunting, etc. were the main factors causing to the loss of biodiversity in Nagaland. Another serious threat to biological diversity happening in the state can be the unplanned developmental activities, widening of roads, agri-link roads which destroyed vast areas of the hilly and mountainous ranges, they added.
Seeing all the destruction happening in and around the state and particularly at the study site-Khonoma, the students opined that developmental activities should be properly planned, assessed and properly documented before the project work(s) are carried out so as to reduce the loss of our rich biological diversity in our state-Nagaland.

The team of students was led by the Environmental Science teacher Dr. Kazhuhrii Eshuo, assisted by Imsuyanger, Biology department and Somorjit Singh, Chemistry Department, of Modern College, Kohima. Meanwhile, the students thanked the college authority for providing college bus, subject teacher and his two colleagues for their assistance during the field study.
