Students asked to jointly fight corruption

Dimapur, Dec. 15 (EMN): President of Ao Students’ Conference (AKM), Imkongwati Longkumer, has urged on the need for the Ao and Sumi students to work together ‘against corruption for a better and stronger society.’

Speaking at the ongoing 48th general conference of the All Sumi Students’ Union (SKK) in Zutovi village under Dimapur district on December 15, Longkumer advised the youngsters to make positive use of the social media and ‘create advantage’ in their use of it.

During panel discussion on career guidance and livelihood, Dr. Khekugha Muru, who also moderated the session, pointed out that Naga people were talented but remains untapped and misused. He stated that the traditional way of education to pursue BA, B.Com, MA etc., after higher secondary was making skill education ‘sparse’ in the society.

“People are talking about dignity of labour but they do not give dignity to the job,” he said and emphasised on the need to change the mindset about appearing only for the state and union public services examinations.

Joining in the discussion, Hekani Jakhalu, panellist and executive chairman of YouthNet, stated that persons in the age group between 15 and 35 years comprised of 8 lakh of the state’s population. Stating that students are facing a tough competition within their age groups, she remarked that there is no place for mediocre.

Chairman of Livingstone Foundation Higher Secondary School, Andrew Ahoto Sema, another panellist, talked about the need to equip youth with skills. “If a nation does not have skill, it will kill the nation.” For livelihood, he opined that an entire village could focus on specialising in a single locally-produced and manufactured item like smoked pork, fermented soy bean etc., which could attract wide attraction. Stating that Naga youth are trying on too many things without success, he advised them to focus on one thing at a time but with sincerity and dedication.

Hekani Jakhalu stated that YouthNet, in collaboration with the government and NGOs, has been imparting skill training in various field to youngsters. She revealed that the non-governmental organisation had provided local job placements to 300 youngsters during the previous year.

“Get out of your comfort zone and opt for any skill training. Even if you do not work in that particular field where you got trained, it is still not a loss for you,” Jakhalu told the youngsters.

In the evening session of December 13, Dr. Hotokhu Chishi, joint director of Health & Family Welfare, spoke on the theme ‘defining moment.’

On December 14, SKK elected new team of office bearers led by Atokiho as the president for the tenure 2017-19.
