KOHIMA, OCTOBER 21: It is seldom that the service and sacrifices of the police personnel are noticed and heralded though they are the ones, who work selflessly behind the scene to keep the law and order for a peaceful society. Apart from the many duties and responsibilities, the Police have been silently working to check criminal activities, preventing crimes, giving protection, assistance and maintaining public law and order. Yet it is often that their services are not acknowledged and applauded.
Due to some corrupt and inefficient personnel, they were tainted as law breakers and manipulators thereby projecting a negative image in the eyes of the public, which needed to be checked and corrected. However, we must be reminded to give the police its due share of recognition and credit from time to time, which they rightfully deserve.
Joining with the rest across the country, the Police Commemoration Day was observed at Kohima wherein the Nagaland Police paid a poignant homage to the police martyrs at New Police Reserve, Tennis Court, Phesama, today.
Giving a brief background of the day, Director General of Police, LL Doungel, narrated how on October 21, 1959, SI Karam Singh along with 20 soldiers were attacked by the Chinese Army at Hot Springs in Ladakh resulting in 10 casualties, and the survivors were imprisoned.Since then, he said October 21 is observed as Police Commemoration Day nationwide across all states in India acknowledging and honouring the supreme sacrifice made by the gallant police personnel as decided during the Annual Conference of Inspectors General of Police of States and Union Territories held in January 1960.
Addressing the police personnel, Doungel remarked, ‘we are not forced to join the police service, we chose this on our volition.’ He, therefore, maintained that it is only worthy that they should be prepared whatever is demanded of them to give their best to make Nagaland Police and Indian Police shine.
Temsu Ao, AIG (Ops) PHQ Kohima, read out the roll of honour of 473 police martyrs from the period August 1, 2015 to September 30, 2016, which included two from Nagaland namely Constable A Khekato Chishi and Constable R Bermong Yimchunger.
Wreaths were laid in memory of the police martyrs led by the DGP followed by invitees, officers and police personnel.
“Let this day also be a reminder to the State police personnel to carry out their duties with loyally, honestly, and with impartiality,’ stated the oath of allegiance.
