Kohima/ Mokokchung, May 21 (EMN): The need to fight against stigma and discrimination of People Living with HIV and AIDS (PLHIV) was emphasised so as to encourage their involvement in the society during the International AIDS Candlelight memorial observed at NHAK on this evening.
Speaking on the theme ‘Ending AIDS together’ organised by Nagaland State AIDS Control Society and Nagaland Network of PLHIV (NNP+), Superintendent of NHAK, Dr. Thorhusie Katiri said there is a need to have a positive frame of mind in order to break the social stigma and discrimination against PLHIV and help them in leading a normal life.Candlelight Mkg
Lamenting that many PLHIV do not come forward for treatment due to the persistent stigma and discrimination, he said once a positive person starts ART (Anti Retroviral Therapy) can lead a normal and healthier life, which will also help bringing down the mortality rate. He, therefore, appealed everyone to join hands as responsible citizens in creating a better atmosphere for PLHIV.
Dwelling on the significance of the day, NNP+ President, Lanu said that the mission of International AIDS Candlelight Memorial is to honour, support and advocate for those who have been affected by the global HIV epidemic through mobilising communities for a world where people do not die of HIV/AIDS and people living with HIV can live a healthy life and with dignity. He also appealed all to continue to support and join the effort.
The participants also lit candles on the AIDS symbol, while also offering silent prayer for those who died of HIV and AIDS.
Compered by Thejangunuo Theunuo, Chaplain NHAK, Vikepu Tepa pronounced the invocation, while nursing students of NHAK presented special number.
Mokokchung also commemorated the 34th International AIDS Candlelight Memorial Day on May 21 at Alempang Baptist Church (Alempang Baptist Arogo (ABA).
The event was initiated by Network of Mokokchung District People Living with HIV&AIDS (NMP+) and District AIDS Prevention Control Unit (DAPCU) and Antiretroviral Therapy Centre (ARTC) in collaboration with Life Founding Centre of ABA.
Dr. Amen, MO of ARTC, Mokokchung, stated that candlelight service is observed to sensitise about the viral disease. He, however, wondered how far we have changed our attitudes toward the PLHA since the inception of the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial service? The doctor said this year’s themes can be materialised only when every individual in our society come together to stop this global epidemic.
Stating that Nagas observed many international events, ABA pastor, Rev. Temsu S remarked that people often forget their social responsibility after the services. Also asserting that many people undergo trauma after they are detected positive, he appealed the PLHAs to come forward to be a testimony for the other which will create positive impact.
NMP+ president Temsu regretted that infection rates have increased and more people are killed despite observing special day annually. He, therefore, said observation of such event should not be taken lightly but be materialist to achieve the desired goal.
Stating that positive approached toward every struggle is the key toward overcoming that negativism, Temsu called upon the PLHA to declare themselves to the world and works towards preventing this viral disease. Temsu also called upon the older persons in the society not to dwell only on the old information’s about the viral disease and stigmatisation but to support the HIV/AIDS victims positively.
Commemorating the 34th International AIDS Candlelight Memorial Service, Network of Kiphire District People Living with HIV/AIDS (KpNP) observed the day in its office on May 21.
The programme was attended by members of KpNP+ and staff of supporting project, wherein Setongpi, Project Coordinator (Vihaan CSC), highlighted on the significance of the event. Positive sharing was presented by Aven, member KpNP+.
The programme was chaired by Khupai, Peer Counselor, and Tsaliba, Member KpNP+, delivered the vote of thanks. The members also observed a minute silence for those who have lost their lives to the epidemic.
