DIMAPUR, JULY 6

In an interesting development, the Parliamentary Working Committee of the newly christened Nagaland Legislators’ Forum on Naga political issue on Monday decided to “request” the Naga Hoho and the ENPO to go and meet the NSCN-K supremo, SS Khaplang and convey “the desire” of the Committee “as well as of the state government and the people of Nagaland” for resumption of ceasefire between the outfit and the government of India.
According to a press release received here today, this decision to send the Naga Hoho and the ENPO on an errand on behalf of the elected representatives and “the people of Nagaland” was taken during a meeting of the Committee members held on Sunday last at the conference hall of the Assembly Secretariat. Sunday’s meeting, it informed, was the first of its kind since the Committee has been formed.
The press statement, quite curiously, did not provide any explanation or reasoning on why the Committee of elected legislators had decided to delegate the Naga Hoho and the ENPO to speak on behalf of the people as well as of the state government. Surely, the elected legislators must know that by virtue of their position, they are indeed the “legitimate” voice of the people as well as of the government!
The Committee, according to the press release, resolved to send a delegation of its members to meet the Prime Minister, the Union Home Minister as well as the Interlocutor to Naga peace talks and convey the “need for peaceful atmosphere by having ceasefire with all groups” and to solve the Naga political issue at the earliest.
It also resolved to appeal all the “national workers” to refrain from violent activities while expressing support to the efforts of the “FNR and civil societies” towards reconciliation among the numerous Naga underground groups.
