New Delhi, July 26 (IANS) In a major security breach, seven minors housed at the Alipur Juvenile Reform Centre escaped on Monday evening and have remained untraced even as a manhunt has been launched nab them, an official said on Wednesday.

The escapees were involved in theft cases and were habitual offenders, the official told IANS on the condition of anonimity.

The Alipur centre with a capacity of housing 150 inmates is considered one of the biggest in the national capital and functions under the Delhi government.

“They hit guard Satpal Singh when he arrived to serve them evening meals around 8.30 p.m. on Monday. They tied him with a bed sheet and locked him in a bathroom before scaling a 10-foot high wall to escape,” the officer said.

A daily diary report on the incident has been lodged and police are investigating the incident. A manhunt has been launched to nab the escapees, he added.
