Dimapur, Sep. 23: The Rotary Club of Dimapur provided 33 equipments for people with disability at a free artificial limbs and calliper camp on Sunday, Sep. 23 at the Rotary Centre in Dimapur.

The camp was organised in association with District Disability Rehabilitation Centre (DDRC) and Bharat Vikas Parishad, Guwahati. The 33 equipments – 15 prosthetics, eight wheelchairs, five elbow crutches and five underarm crutches – were sponsored by five persons.

DDRC, District Hospital Dimapur, in-charge Dr. Imlitemsu Ozukum in his address reported that the DDRC, which is the only centre in the state looking after the requirements of people with disability, continues to perform with no resources but with the involvement of concerned NGOs. He said the centre which got underway in 2000 had gone through temporary closures on several accounts but since Aug. 1 2016 the centre has been running effectively.

Ozukum has therefore appealed the public to avail the facilities available and also requested the Rotary Club Dimapur to continue with their assistance.

District Hospital Medical Superintendent, Dr. Z Kheshito Zhimo lamented that although there are many people living with disability in the state, especially in rural areas, and supporting themselves with handmade crutches, such camps do not reach them because of failure to exchange information. The MS therefore appealed to reach out to the rural areas if any such events are organised in future.

Chief Medical Officer, Dimapur Dr. K Vikato Kinimi extended his gratitude to the Rotary Club and the sponsors for their charitable programme and assured them of assistance from the medical department.

The CMO exhorted the beneficiaries and people with disability to be an asset to the society and not to be disheartened with their situation, which was beyond their control. Also, he informed the gathering to register themselves at DDRC and assured of all possible assistance from the government.
