Dimapur, Jan. 17 (EMN): The rumblings within the Naga People’s Front (NPF) finally erupted into the open on Wed. when former chief minister and current Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) Neiphiu Rio tendered his resignation from the party and joined the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) at Dimapur.
A press note from the NDPP has stated that the party’s senior members led by President Chingwang and Working President Alemtemshi Jamir met with the MP at the latters residence in Dimapur and requested him to formally join the NDPP, which was accepted by the MP.
“The NDPP appealed to the honourable MP to formally join the NDPP and lead the party in the forthcoming general elections. Mr. Rio welcomed the appeal of the NDPP and formally accepted the invitation while thanking the NDPP leadership and all its rank and file for the appeal and invitation to join the party. On acceptance of the invitation by Mr. Rio, the NDPP has welcomed the MP and three times former chief minister into the party fold,” it stated.
It added that in his interaction with the NDPP leaders, Rio acknowledged that the NDPP was formed to bring positive changes to the Naga society and implement a vision that ensures transparency in governance, usher in progressive development, and combat corruption.
As of filing this report Rio had tendered his resignation from the active and primary membership of the NPF, a copy of which was received here through email.
With the latest move of the three-time chief minister and one of the tallest leaders that the NPF party had produced in the recent years, there is expected to be major aftershocks in the next few days.
