Rengma students celebrate newcomers

Dimapur, August 20 (EMN): Members of the Dimapur Rengma Students’ Union (DRSU) celebrated their “Freshers’ Day” on August 19. The event was conducted in the town hall of Dimapur.
Assistant Commissioner of Dimapur Police William Kath was the chief guest of the event, updates informed on Sunday.
In his address Kath encouraged the students to work hard and to ‘achieve success,’ according to the updates. “In these crucial years, challenge your capabilities.” He was quoted as having encouraged the gathering to ‘create happy memories and be a responsible citizen as students who have entered a new phase of life with high hopes.’
The organisation informed to have felicitated students who secured 75% and above during the recently conducted High School Leaving Certificate & Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate examinations.
Short speeches were delivered by the Vice President of the Naga Students’ Federation Boveio Poukai Duo; president of the Rengma Students’ Union RN David Magh; and president of the Tenyimei Students’ Union of Dimapur Azo Wetsah.
In their speeches, Duo said that the Naga people should not be selfish and individualistic but ought to have a ‘zeal to change the world starting with the development of our villages taking the examples of our neighbouring states Mizoram, Meghalaya, etc.,’ the press release stated.
Further, the student leader encouraged the Rengma community to ‘remember the great Rengma warriors, not to allow anything to break the bond of brotherhood, to be more interactive so that their sacrifices will not go in vain and will be recognized by others and also not to forget the western Rengma’s from Assam.’
Further, RN David Magh encouraged the new stduents to ‘learn from other Naga tribes, to move forward and be united.’ He said, “Do not be focused on worldly materials but focus on your dream for the glory of God.”
“if we don’t know our language and culture, our identity will be lost,” he said, according to the press release.
Another student leader, Azo Wetsah also exhorted the gathering. ‘As one enters a new chapter of life, focus on the things to take care of and not to look elsewhere, through God all things are possible,’ the press release stated quoting him. He asked the students to ‘feel free and seek the help and support from the TSUD as they would do their best in what they could.’
The president of the Rengma Public Organisation in Dimapur, Hilo Semp was also among those who exhorted the students. He exhorted the new students on the importance of knowing ‘who they are, to respect and love the rich culture and language.’ He congratulated the DRSU leaders for the ‘great improvement over the years and for taking the initiative of bringing the Rengma students in Dimapur together and beyond.’
Semp said, “Your presence, involvement and participation should be physical and not only on social media.”
“Do not shelter behind others and make excuses, be brave and responsible, respect the sacrifices of other people for the Rengmas”.
Members of Dimapur-based Rengma head bodies, Rengma Mothers’ Association of Dimapur, Rengma Public Organisation of Dimapur, among other Dimapur based tribal students’ organisations attended the event, the updates informed.
