Rapist gets 10 years rigorous imprisonment

Kohima, April 20 (EMN): Principal District & Session Judge, Kohima has passed an order of ten years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 10000 to a rape accused Thanwalo Magh (28) on April 11, 2017.
The accused was charged with two offences: one for rape and the other for causing harm to the victim. He was sentenced to 6 years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 6000 for the first offence and 4 years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 4000 for the second offence.
It may be mentioned that the accused raped a woman of 60 years from Kohima village on the fateful evening of August 22, 2015, at around 4 p.m. while she was tending her paddy. On seeing a man coming out from her hut with a dao (Machete), the victim, considering him to be a thief, shouted at him enquiring why would he take her machete away. In response, the accused advanced towards her and started kicking and beating her ‘black and blue.’
Though she struggled to defend herself, the man overpowered her and violated her twice.Informing the announcement of order by the Judge Y Maongkaba Imchen, Public Prosecutor, Kathu Rengma, said initially 2-3 persons were arrested on suspicion. However, after investigation they were discharged, while the main accused Thanwalo Magh was arrested and the charge sheet was submitted on November 23, 2015. Appreciating the Investigating Officer (IO) of this case, SI Livinuo, Rengma said she did quiet a good job in her investigation. Also appreciating the help of the public, he said unless the public came forward, the police could not have done anything on their own.
He has attributed to the support and cooperation of the prosecution witness, police witness, and civilians who have presented a good case in the court thereby delivering justice to the victim.
