Rape victims get compensation

KOHIMA, July 4 (EMN): Justice LS Jamir, Judge of Gauhati High Court and Executive Chairman of Nagaland State Legal Services Authority, handed over an amount of Rs 1 lakh each to two rape victims under the Nagaland Victim Compensation Scheme, 2012, at his office chamber, Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench, on July 4.
Justice LS Jamir urged the panel lawyers not to let difficulty be a barrier in achieving success, especially in helping victims of crime. He lauded the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority and the panel lawyers for taking up the issue with care and passion.
Justice LS Jamir further encouraged civil societies to identify victims and spread awareness on such benefit.
Lekhono Lese, president of Southern Angami Women Organisation (SAWO), has expressed gratitude to Nagaland State Legal Services Authority for helping the rape victims.
Panel lawyer NSLSA, Neiteo Koza, who took up the cases, informed that the compensation was recommended through Kohima District Legal Services Authority and forwarded to Relief and Rehabilitation Department on January 2017. She hoped that the concerned departments would take up such cases on priority basis in a timely manner.
Apprising on maximum limit of compensation in case of loss or injury under the Nagaland Victim Compensation Scheme, 2012, Neiteo Koza pointed out that for loss of life the maximum limit of compensation is Rs 2 lakh, while for loss of any limb of part of body resulting 80% or above handicap is Rs 1 lakh, loss of any limb or part of body resulting 40% and below 80% handicap is Rs 75,000, rape of minor is Rs 1 lakh, rape is Rs 50,000.
She further informed that for rehabilitation, the maximum limit of compensation is Rs 50,000, while for loss of any limb or part of body resulting below 40% handicap is Rs 75,000, and injury causing severe mental agony to women and child victims in case like human trafficking is Rs 1 lakh and simple loss or injury to child victim is Rs 20,000.
